May 2017

Messy Church!

Our joint Messy Church venture with Christ Church URC continues to flourish, with the two churches taking it in turns to act as host. The sessions are currently held in the school holidays to make it easier for people to attend. The May half term session was held at St John's and the theme was 'The Good Samaritan'.

One of the activities involved making 'plasters' using crackers and cream cheese with tomato sauce or tomatoes as some 'blood'. The children then ate their creations!

Here you can see two of our young people getting stuck in!

April 2017 - Part 2

On 29th April, an intrepid band of 17 walkers completed an 8½ mile sponsored walk around the churches of Clapham and Battersea. This was in aid of Unlock, a Christian charity which aims to support inner city churches and organisations in spreading the gospel in their communities. Here is the team outside one of the many churches they visited.

And, just to prove they still had plenty of energy left at the end, some of the group decided to try the outdoor gym on Clapham Common!

Easter Sunday!

Easter and one of the most important festivals in the Christian calendar!

The church was decorated with our usual Easter lilies donated in memory of loved ones and gorgeous flower arrangements, and at the foot of the lectern was one lady's depiction of the three crosses.

Here we have some of our congregation grouped round the altar, with our banner just below the east window showing 'Jesus is Alive' and this year's Easter garden just in front of them. A wonderful celebration!

March 2017-

No flowers in the Church itself during March as these are all removed during Lent.

However, these lovely planters, organised and tended by one of our congregation, continue to bloom just outside the main door of the church, heralding spring and new life.

December 2016 -

In December, we held our annual Christingle service.  During the service we all made our own Christingles and here are some of our young people proudly holding up their creations.

Also in December, we said goodbye to our Vicar, Canon Carol. On 11th December, we held a 'Celebration of Ministry' service, which was followed by cake and bubbly! Here is Canon Carol cutting the beautiful farewell cake made by a very talented member of our congregation.

Joint Service!

31st July was a 5th Sunday in the month and on 5th Sundays we usually meet for a joint service with the other churches in our Pastoral Community. This service was hosted by St Mary's Widford. Each church was asked to bring an 'Olympic Ring' - the Rio Olympics were due to start shortly - and during the service the rings were labelled with the theme of the service, 'Take Courage Don't Be Afraid'.

Here you can see one of our young people holding the St John's ring.

April 2016-

In April 2016, we were lucky enough to have the entrance porch to our church repainted by the some of the Painting and Decorating students from Chelmsford College.

Here are some of the students taking a well-earned break with Canon Carol.

October 2015 -

In October, we celebrated Harvest and our Harvest Festival Family Service was enjoyed by all who attended. It was great to see so many young people there.

The church looked beautiful, decked out in autumn colours, thanks to our very talented flower arranging team.

The lively service was then followed by a delicious shared lunch enjoyed by everyone.

Mothering Sunday

and Community Arts Festival!

March 2015 was very busy here at St. John's.

On 15th March, as part of our Mothering Sunday service, we had a taster of 'Messy Church'. Both children and grown-ups had a great time trying out a number of different craft and music activities linked to the Mothering Sunday theme.

Then March 21st saw St. John's staging its second Community Arts Festival with arts and crafts, music and dancing.

What a fantastic month!

North Transept!

The North Transept now houses our new child-friendly area for young children and their parents. It was blessed by Canon Carol as part of our Patronal Festival this month. It is available during most main Sunday morning services with quiet toys and activities.

Here you can see the sofa being tested out by Canon Carol and some of our children.

Here is the team outside one of the many churches they visited.

Also in May, the war memorial in front of the church was cleaned, ready for the commemoration of the outbreak of World War 1.
