No. 82

The cottage on the corner of Moulsham Street and St John’s Road (which can be seen peeking over the wall) pre-dates the church. It was the family home of the Saltmarsh family, nurserymen and plant breeders (hence Nursery road, just further south west down Moulsham street). Joseph Saltmarsh was a great breeder of Zonal pelargoniums. One of his introductions was a variety called ‘Mrs Pollock’. First marketed in 1858 it is still available today.

The house on the other side of the wall is even older than the church! The man who first lived there discovered a new flower and called it Mrs Pollock (we think he named it after his wife). There are no rules for naming new flowers so they’re often given unusual names – like Black Bat Flower, Darwin’s Slippers or even Parrot’s Beak!

Try making up your own flower name using the method below:

1. Favourite colour

2. Your first name

3. Favourite Animal

4. Add the word flower at the end

e.g. Orange Jack Monkey Flower or Lilac Louise Llama Flower
